PSHE
Children at Harnham Junior School experience PSHE and Citizenship through a whole-school scheme called JIGSAW.

Our School Values are based on the acronym F.A.I.T.H. which demonstrates the qualities that we feel are essential for all our children to have in order to achieve their potential and to be healthy, happy and resilient citizens who are ready to move forward to the next challenges and opportunities in life. We want to empower children to be articulate, self-confident and responsible citizens and to equip them for life and life-long learning.
Our PSHE scheme (Jigsaw) is comprised of the following themes:
1 - Being me in my world
2 - Celebrating difference
3 - Dreams and Goals
4 - Healthy me
5 - Relationships
6 - Changing me
Through these themes, we enable children to understand how forgiveness is an important aspect of developing healthy relationships. The inclusive nature of PSHE lessons at HJS encourages all children to positively participate in the sharing of thoughts and ideas; demonstrating active love. Children are therefore inspired by each other to engage, learn and develop important skills for life and wellbeing. When discussing more emotionally demanding aspects of the PSHE curriculum and life experiences, children learn to have a tenacious approach and the resilience required to navigate these challenges robustly. At HJS, we foster a harmonious ethos which embeds an understanding of how individual actions affect positive living in a healthy society.

These themes are explored across the whole school during weekly timetabled sessions and through whole-school assemblies. Throughout these themes, children are encouraged to practise mindfulness; the process of being aware of their thoughts and feelings as they arise and being able to focus their mind. By encouraging positive self- image, a secure sense of identity and self-respect, children are in the right place to grow healthy relationships with others, therefore creating the harmony aspired to in our School Values. Children are encouraged to discuss thoughts and feelings openly in a safe, secure environment where children show sensitivity, understanding and respect towards others at all times. With this trusting, open and supportive environment established, the more sensitive aspects of Sex and Relationships education can be delivered effectively.
The Jigsaw scheme, meets all the requirements of the statutory guidance for Relationships and Health Education.
As part of our Health Education we aim to teach children about physical health and mental wellbeing to give them the information that they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing. We want children to recognise what is normal and what is an issue in themselves and others and, when issues arise, know how to seek support as early as possible from appropriate sources.
Relationships, Sex and Health education is taught as part of our P.S.H.E. programme through the ‘changing me’ theme in term 6. Parents are invited to discuss the content of these SRE lessons and view resources used in advance. Parents have the right to request their child be withdrawn from the sex education P.S.H.E. lessons.

The impact of the PSHE curriculum is measured through discussions with children, where ‘pupil voice’ is gathered but it should also be evident when observing ‘how’ children communicate in class and around the school. If the PSHE and C curriculum is effective, there will be an atmosphere of trust and respect throughout the whole school. Children will be happy, healthy and equipped with the emotional literacy and social skills needed for school life and beyond.
