Vision, ETHOS & VALUES

Our Mission Statement

Our school mission statement ‘Aspire to Succeed’ is the heartbeat of our school and simply means ‘Try to do your best’.

Our Vision

Our Christian vision at HJS is underpinned by Jesus’ Parable of The Good Samaritan alongside the quote from Matthew 22:39 ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’.

In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus taught the importance of understanding how we can be good neighbours to each other and how we can live out our beliefs. At HJS we want all our pupils to be given the opportunity to build their spiritual journeys based on a firm understanding of treating others in the same way we would want to be treated. We want all our children to flourish in an inclusive community where everyone respects each other and celebrates equity, justice, diversity with a deep sense of belonging.

Everyone at HJS should, through positive actions, treat each other with love, kindness and actively encourage each other to ‘Aspire to Succeed’ in all we do, thus building a safe, vibrant, and loving community based on strong Christian values. Our children leave HJS not just having achieved well academically, but being outward facing, compassionate and always showing unconditional love for their neighbour.

Ethos & Values

At Harnham Church of England Junior School, we aim to be at the heart of the community by providing an education of the highest quality within a Christian ethos. To do this:

  • We ensure our school is a joyful place where everyone can flourish with faith, love, laughter and learning.

  • We provide a welcoming environment where everyone accepts and celebrates each other as individuals and as part of our community.

  • We nurture the self-esteem, happiness and resilience that comes from, and is necessary for, life-long learning.

  • We provide every child with memorable and fulfilling experiences, recognising and celebrating a wide range of achievement.

  • We work together in the spirit of kindness so all learners thrive.

  • We build and sustain relationships based on mutual respect, and understanding of our rights and responsibilities, with all members of the community.

  • We provide a secure and stimulating learning environment using ideas, strategies and equipment to foster understanding and interaction.

  • We celebrate perseverance, resilience and risk taking, ensuring children welcome challenge and use mistakes as opportunities to learn, always treating others with care, compassion and kindness.

  • We enrich educational experiences in a calm, challenging positive and enjoyable environment.

  • We help our pupils achieve their best by knowing where they are with their learning and how to move forward.

  • We value all members of our school community and encouraging them to value themselves by talking with and listening to our pupils and all members of our school community.

  • We undertake personal and professional development to help progress towards these and developing shared goals.

Our School Values

Harnham Junior School has a set of 5 key values that underpin the vision of the School, these values are unique to our School in that they have been developed by members of our School community and have been tailored to the needs of the School.

Our School key Values are underpinned by the Good Samaritan parable – that we should, through our positive actions, treat everyone with love and kindness. They are based around the mnemonic FAITH.

We promote these values by creating a warm, caring, supportive atmosphere in the School, in which all members of the School community know they are important, valued and needed.

In our life together, we show:

Forgiveness through patience and peace

Active love through compassion and service

Inspiration through encouragement and friendship

Tenacity through perseverance  and courage

Harmony through respect, trust and joy
